54 Waterhole

Sarrita King

54 Waterhole
90 x 120cm
$3,000.00

Contemporary Aboriginal artist, Sarrita King, paints the naturally occurring waterholes that she remembered while traveling around Alice Springs and Katherine.

The scarcity of drinking water in certain regions meant that specific knowledge of where these waterholes were located, as well as their preservation methods, was paramount to survival.

Today Aboriginal people speak of where waterholes once were as many of them have dried up due to drought or diminished maintenance.

The waterholes are fed by underground streams pushing through land and rock.  Sarrita shows streams by ribbons of wavy lines intricately entwined across the canvas in muddy and dried ochre colours, just as she experienced them.
