Historical

Dinny's date of birth has been put back as 1922 or even earlier (as far forward as 1944). The artist says he survived the Coniston massacre of 1928, which leads credence to the earlier date.

Dinny spent many years working as a stockman across the Territory before arriving in Papunya in the mid 70's. As a senior custodian forthe Warlpiri people, he is officially recognised as leader of rain making and Water Dreaming ceremonies. He 'ploices' other corroborees and paints the bodies of those taking part in the ceremonies and is well known for his powerful singing voice.

Painting

Being a cousin to Clifford Possum and Billy Stockman, and elder brother to Kaapa, it was logical for Dinny to join the painting group.

He travelled to Melbourne in 1977 for a show of Papunya Tula Artists at the Realities Gallery and one of his designs was used for a tained glass window in the National Gallery of Victoria. He stayed with artist Trevor Nickolls, on whom his visit had a powerful influence.

In 1981 Dinny visited Sydney with Paul Carroll to construct the first sand painting ever to be seen outside of Central Australia, and afterwards travelled to Melbourne to execute a print at the Victorian Print Workshop. In May 1988 he and Maxie Tjampitjinpa were artists-in-residence at the Wagga City Art Gallery.

In Alice Springs, he paints for the Centre for Aborigial Artists. His Dreamings include Water, Willy Willy, Pelican, Bush Turkey, Emu, Goanna and Bushfire.

In 1991 he travelled with Paddy Carroll to US celleges and Native American communities on a tour organised by poets Billy Marshall-Stoneking and Nigel Roberts.
