George was born in the desert at Mukula, west of Kiwirrkura in Western Australia

George and his family walked to Papunya via Mount Doreen and Yuendumu in 1960.He has lived at various locations, Yai Yai Creek, Warawa, Mt Liebig and now resides at Kintore with his family. He is the younger brother of leading femaile artists Naata and Nancy Ross Nungarrayi.

George began painting at Papunya around 1977, since then his painting has developed to a distinctive line style.  Tjungarrayi paints Tingari of his ancestral country which includes the sites around Wala Wala, Kiwirrkura, Kulkuta, Karku, Kilpina and Wilkinkarra (Lake MacKay).
